WHO WANTS TO HELP
With the current activities that we are having for the last few years things has been harder for us to look after the orphanage by our self. We were having them since they were “days old” babies and they are now started their schooling years already. The room has been too small for them and we are now in the process of building new rooms for the orphans. We are trying to accommodate them better and in the healthy environment. Nothing else other than the orphan's better future has been our goal since we were starting this orphanage. We have proven so far that the orphan has been living well under our care since they were babies and their schooling has been good too. We are happy to see them progressing towards a better future.
We need help to secure our purpose , that is to send them to school till they are able to compete and to find a good living with their skills and to use their abilities to help others too. We are in the process of giving them the equipment to go fishing rather than just giving them their food all the time.
We are currently having orphans with the age of 5 months as the youngest and the oldest is being the second year in university. Our expenses are consist of so many things and getting bigger by days. For the little ones their breakfast has been porridge with egg ( boiled or fried) followed by a glass of milk and a multi vitamin. Milk is given during breakfast and dinner time. Their other meal has been rice with veggies and other side dishes which containing good vitamins and minerals. Eggs are given daily but meat , fish and chicken are alternatively given. Most of their cloths are donated by friends except their school uniform.
Sponsorship is required
Any one who wants to help and giving them a sponsorship are welcomed. You may choose which child to sponsor or else we will distribute the donated funding according to the out standing needs.
“You may come and check “any time to the orphanage and to see them directly. The best is you can come and give your “love gift” to them directly. Average cost per child is around 50 SGD or 34 USD per month.
Who to be helped
You may give sponsorship to the children who live at the orphanage or to the children that we are also helping them which are still living with their relatives out side the orphanage. It is your choice.
What else needed to be helped?
Based on our last visit, we were making some data about houses without toilets at near by our orphanage. We were simply able to identify 22 houses within walking distance from the orphanage having no toilet what so ever. This can be a dangerous matter on spreading illnesses through the dust and flies. Based on our calculation a healthy toilet can be built by Rp. 2 000 000 ( 1 USD = 9000 Rupiah ) . The size will be 2 by 2 meters, proper roof and door, a small water container, sewer digging and cemented one , and a “ squatting” toilet. The material to build are :
10 pieces of zink roof of RP 30 000 per piece
80 pieces of bricks each of Rp 2000
10 set of iron/stell bars size 10 mm for pillars Rp 35 000 per piece
15 bags of cement , Rp 31000 per bag
4 pieces of 5by 10 cm wooden material rp 58 000 per piece
4 meter of zink material for the door structure RP 25 000 per piece
Nails of 2 different sizes Rp 100 000
Squatting toilet Rp 150 000
Some paint material for the wooden surfaces Rp 25 000
The total cost is Rp 1 810 000 , extra of 190 000 for part of the transport fee and others. Another thing to consider is the rising prices in building materials.
These 22 houses most of them are owned by poor elderly people and some younger family with daily income of about 1,6 USD ( of average 10 hours of labour either selling veggies or working as a helper to the fisherman). I can only recall the 15 names (families) that having no toilets , they are : Erna Taumboy family, Anika Sabaat family, Maria Lassa family,Ance Nestano family, Adolfina Taumboy family,Siuta Umbulele family, Febi Taumboy, Maria Tallo family, Lamber Tuaka family, Mesakh Olbata family, Boas Sabaat family,Boas Nesnano family, Noh Tualaka family Tera Tossi family and Simon Sabaat family. The rest I will try to remember them or will ask their names again later.
The school near by the orphanage ( Matani Primary School) has no toilet too. Around 320 children and teacher must share 2 toilets. The school’s toilet will be costing more as the size will be bigger.
A water truck
I am thinking that it will be great if we can have a water truck and able to give water to many people. Water is the most precious thing that we can give in the area where is orphanage is. If we do not have a water truck , 5000 liters can be bought by RP 60 000 or about 6,3 USD. But if we have the truck we can buy the water by RP 12 000 plus the fuel expenses. The fuel cost is about Rp 5000 Rupiah per liter. The distance to the water source is around 9 Km ( round trip about 20 KM) . One liter of fuel can cover some 8 to 9 KM . The tires can last around 6 months and the car can be used around 8to 10 years with a good maintenance.
The truck will cost Rp 190 000 000 or around 22 000 USD. To send the water truck from the factory ( Jakarta) to Timor will cost about
10 000 000
rupiah ( some 1 200 USD)
The souls that can be benefiting are at least 500 people or may be 2000 people depending to our water distribution.
The cost per day to run the truck is about Rp 100 000 (11 USD) for 10 sorties/ trips vice versa just for the fuel. A driver will cost some Rp 800 000 per month (about USD 90) plus a daily allowance of 10 000 Rupiah (1,2 USD). Over all per month will be 90 plus 30 USD = 120 USD. We will provide the driver’s food 3 times daily. The person who assist the driver to operate the generator and pumping the water will cost about 500 000 Rupiah per month ( 55 USD) plus the daily allowance of 10 000 Rupiah ( 1,2 USD) .
The choice of having the water truck over drilling for water at the orphanage:
1. at the end of 8th year we can buy a new water truck.
2. we can bring the water to more places/people rather than at one place ( at the orphanage)
3. we can create a jobs ( driver and his assistance)
4. we are helping the people buy selling the water cheaper
5. teaching the orphans some sort of trading and selling ( economic activities such as marketing, distribution , promotion in the actual activitity not just as a theory).
6. our effort will be heard as a real thing and can be felt directly.
7. With not by too much talking but we are doing it ( spreading " Love" to others).
Drilling for water at the orphanage will surely benefiting the orphanage with great water supply , but the cost will be more expensive as the drilling alone will cost some 11 000 USD ( the hardness of the soil will make the drilling heads broken several time) . The reason is the water is too deep ( 70 to 100 Meters) and the soil is so hard ( coral). The machine/ pump will cost around 6 000 USD and the live of the submersible pump will be guaranteed for 1 year only. The piping will cost around 2 to 3 000 USD ( with the water tower) .

Hi Budi & Peggy,
I was referred to your website by Amy Wong, who is the landlady of my home. Your efforts to help the people of West Timor is really laudable and exemplary. I would like to be of some little help in a small way through means of a cash donation. Please let me know how & which account I need to transfer the fund.
Thanks,
Giri
