Roslin Orphanage in West Timor

It was planned to be built in 5 years time in March 2001. Actual building was completed and officially opened by the Nusa Tenggara Timur province's Governor on April 6 2002. Mr Alexander Piet Tallo.

It was because of SIA was giving us the back dated pay and the bonus payment earlier in 2002. All of the back dated pay was used together with the bonuses for that year plus some few months of saving from my salary to finance the project. Instead of 5 years it was completed in 11 months.

Our real handicap has been water, we can not do much without water (even to mix the cement when we build the building, we have to buy water in truck containers).

We are focusing on giving the children a good up bringing and a good education for their future dealing with the real world. Only with a good education people can make good progresses.

We are trying our best to teach the children to work hard with the soil for our own needs such as veggies, extra nutrition from fruits, making some traditional crackers and other food from tapioca. We are also teaching them to be self sufficient and try to help others .
For example the older orphans will help out the younger one with their home works or other tasks. We teach them about basic sanitation and how to live in clean environment.

Tender loving care seemed to be the best way to lead them into the path that we want to teach them. All of the children will always obey us when we want them to do things timely, like taking a bath, studying and watering the garden. When things are done with such a happy feeling the load feels easier especially if we are doing it together.
Please give us you thoughts about how to do things better and please visit us some time.

From the dry land to the much greener land
From days old baby to school children age
From uncertainty to a hopeful future

The orphanage has been progressing well from day to day and constantly we are making more and more efforts towards better goals that we want to achieve. The orphanage's ground was a dry land with nothing can properly grow on it, we made it into a place where people find in as a nice place to take their eyes into it as the plants are green and able to produce some fruits too.

The orphans which were admitted as "days" old children have been growing healthily as they are living in a cleaner and safer place more over with such tender loving care hands as their constant handler.

It will be very much different as if the children are growing within their original places (their own people at their own community) as life will be very hard and no future can be predicted. To them living means constant struggles for the whole family or living means a constant day to day of uncertainties.

Roslin orphanage have been taking care the orphanage and the orphans with our best effort together with some of our loyal and dedicated personnel. Much better progresses can be achieved if we are having a good team. The orphanage has been a place where the neighbors are gathering and a place for sharing .The involvement and interactions with the local communities is a great thing to do so that we can grow up together and we can share things for the better life and values that we can give to each other.

On this pictures we can see the children from different orphanages which we invited them to celebrate the 2004 Christmas and Year End party for them.
Many of them were so excited just to see the Christmas tree where the lights are twinkling as many of them do not have the luxury of electricity. In fact many of them came well before the time that they were supposed to come (instead of 17:00 PM they were start coming in at 13:00 PM).
The orphanage has been a place where the neighbors are looking for new things, such as ideas or knowledge as we have been constantly trying to bring educational matters to them (such as books, knowledge about things in the modern worlds where are living with all the luxury of electronics, electricity, helpful gadgets and computer etc).
We are trying to bring up the orphanage to a place where we can learn together about what we should know and what can be helpful for the children’s future.
For start we have shown them how we changed the orphanage from a dry land into a land where the trees are growing well.

It is a big transformation from the time we build the orphanage where the land was so dry and nothing can grow into this green landscape. We are also able have a good harvest of fruits occasionally where the neighbors are not.
By working hand in hand we can create good things and a productive one. By constant learning we will be able to progress well. By giving the orphans a good knowledge we can help them to shape their future better and being able to compete in the real world.

By January next 2005, some of the “days old” children will be starting their school .It will be a joy for us to see them progressing academically and living in the world of togetherness with the rest of the orphans. We are teaching them to help our each other comes naturally without being asked to do it. It would be nice if that thing can be done.
We can still remember when we picked them up from their villages as one day old, weeks old of months old at the most and by next January some will be attending their school. It is a big step for the orphanage as we have to feed them not only food but formal education. The older ones are also progressing well and one of them will be starting his second year in the university. Some of the children have been given free school fees as their grades are good.
The joy during our time spent with the little ones was the time when we were doing anything and they came to help us. It is a great thing to see them trying to bring water for the plants while we were watering the garden or trying to sweep the floor when we were cleaning our orphanage.
The most joy to my wife and I were the time all of them call us as their own parents. Our morning with them has been “biscuit time” where they will be flocking to us, getting biscuits and saying thank you when receiving the biscuits.

Elias, Edu and Viktor said: We were so small and cute .Nothing much that we can do except crying for food and for love. Your tender hands and cares are the one that we wanted to have to make us feel comfortable, secure and safe. We have no biological parents around but you can do it for us some times.

These were our home’s look from out side and from inside but now we live. At Roslin orphanage we can have more spacious and clean environment.
Some are still worst than us, their homes are made of hay and bamboo like the picture below

This is the hut that we live and these are our clothes.
Prity said: I was a small 5 months baby when I came but now I am four years and 4 month old and I can help out to
Feed my orphan brothers and sisters.
We learn a lot in this orphanage’s life and we are now understood better that life is beautiful if we are working together.
I am feeding my orphan brother Elias in this picture; he is 3, 5 years old.

Peggy and I are so fortunate to be able to have our hands directly looking after the orphanage children for these years. Some of you if you are willing to come and join us are welcome.
It is always a joy to see the children to grow in the same environment and safe. It is a joy for us to see them smiling and to make them progressing well. All of the children are claiming that we are their parents this is because from the beginning we are with them and taking care of them day and night like our own children. The funny thing was when our Son (Christian) having his holiday with my wife (Peggy). When Christian came at the orphanage and calling my wife “mama”, one of the orphanage children was asking my wife. Why this boy called you mama? You are my mama but how come he calls you mama too?
After some explanation Edu said to Christian that they will share “the same mama “together.
The orphanage has been our escape place for the last 4 years during our children’s school holiday where we went to no other then the orphanage. Life can be cruel in the city lives but the orphanage is able to give us different angle to think and to make our attitude better to face the facts of life.

It has been years that you taking care of us and we are getting bigger and bigger now .Some of us will be ready to go to school from January next January 2005. Thank you for the tender loving hands and cares. We were just “days old “babies when we came to the orphanage. We will do our best and hopefully that we can be successful in our studies. We will never be able to pay you back but we will do our best to help others in the future.

The orphanage children are much better than the children at so many different villages that we have been visiting.
Many villages are only able to have Primary school and Secondary school unless if they are able to travel to some 10 kilo meters or more on foot to go to the Secondary school in the nearby village or town. The very sad thing is the drop out rate is very high. Out of 100 children enrolling to Primary school it will be about 60% maximum to finish it and from that 60% finishing the Primary School , it will be about 20 to 30 % are able to continue to go top school ( the rest will be working as young farmers or to look after their animals like cows and goats).
Out of 100 children enrolling the Primary School it will be about 10 % of them can actually finished the high school.
Looking at the city side it will be ok but the rural area has been so bad with the education matters (simply because of lagging in transportation and poverty).
Our visits to different villages have been as sad as start having conversation with them. Mainly that they do not have a proper school, both the school condition physically and the equipment. Most of them (90%) are only having one book to write every thing as their work book and the book to write their notes.
Our best present to them work books, school utensils like pens or pencils, uniform (even though a used one), shoes (none of them are wearing shoes even sandals are a luxury already), school backs (they kept their book(s) on a plastic shopping backs if they have one).

It is nice to see them wearing a reasonably good and clean uniform and giving them books to write.

Michael leads the orphans playing and milk drinking after breakfast .
The library and the mobile library project Since 3 days ago (September19th 2005) at the orphanage, we have started to build the library and at the same time we are planning to have the mobile library as soon as possible.
The same as the library building we are also slowly starting to build more rooms for the orphanage children as they are growing and needing more space accordingly.
We will make additional 10 by 5 meters for the boys and the girls, right behind the library.
The library is very important to help the children with their knowledge.
The children can look at the books according to their interest and their hobby.
Any of you who want to donate educational books is welcome.
Other things which will enhance their knowledge are also appreciated.
As we have observed for the last 5 years to this region, the rate of drop out student is high. We can help them to improve their knowledge and education from this library projects.
Food is important but without higher education people can not make their future better.
Based on this thought we are committed to build this library.
